Books

We're great believers that smart fundraisers don't just read fundraising books. Here are some that we recommend highly.

And, once you've read a book on our list, we'd love to hear your review!

New for 2009

The Story Factor
By Annette Simmons
2001, Basic Books (Perseus Book Group)
Great fundraising is great storytelling – end of story. In this engaging and fascinating book, Simmons takes us through the ‘anatomy’ of compelling stories and gives great direction on improving the stories we all tell every day. An absolute must read.

Beyond Buzz
By Lois Kelly
2007, AMACOM
Fundraisers are abuzz with the potential that new media offer to us. We’re all anxious to leverage Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and MySpace (to name just a few) to find those new dollars. But before we venture forth, we should take a few hours to read this book. Lois Kelly makes a powerful argument that buzz without meaning will be yesterday’s news in no time. Thoughtful, well-written and fun to read.

The 4-Hour Workweek
By Timothy Ferriss
2007, Crown Publishers (Random House)
This book is for those of us who know we need to manage proactively – but find ourselves spending too much time responding and firefighting to move our agendas forward. Ferriss has innovative takes on how we can manage the demands on our time, limit the distance we need to stretch and incorporate quality of life into our careers. You may or may not take to this one – but it’s definitely worth a flip-through if you think you need to change the way you do things.

A Whole New Mind
By Daniel H. Pink
2005, Riverhead Books (Penguin Group)
This book is amazing! Pink clearly makes the case that automation, abundance and Asia have transformed our economy and society from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age. In the new world (and new economy) holistic right-brainers are on the ascendant – while the left-brain linear skills of computer programmers and lawyers aren’t what they used to be. Pink compellingly lists the ‘six senses’ (design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning) that will propel success in this new and exciting time. This book is mind-bending – and just plain fun to read.

Check out some of our previously recommended books.
